Performance Breathing® with Sacha
Your life is defined by the quality of your breath. An hour of deliberate breathing, taught properly, at the Recovery Studio in Paihia. Add a sauna and cold plunge before or after, your choice, and it becomes the full midweek reset.
What it is
Most of us take around 20,000 breaths a day and were never taught how. This class treats breathing as a skill. We start with how you breathe now, breaking down the mechanics most people have never looked at: where the breath goes, how it moves and what's driving it. Then we take you through the gears.
What you'll do
- Activate. Patterns that lift your energy and sharpen your focus, for before training, before a dive, before a big meeting, or when you need to be switched on.
- Down-regulate. Patterns that settle your nervous system, for after a hard day, in a stressful moment, or when you need to get back to sleep at 3am.
- Build capacity. The work that underpins breath-hold and the reason freedivers do this. It's also what lets you stay calm under effort and pressure.
- Optimise. Breathing that supports posture, core and strength, and eases the tight necks and sore backs that come with poor breathing patterns.
We measure where you start so you can see it change, with a simple score you track week by week.
Why breath, heat and cold together
Your breath is the one part of your nervous system you can steer directly. Slow, controlled breathing signals the body to shift out of fight-or-flight; in a Stanford randomised trial, five minutes a day of structured breathing improved mood and lowered breathing rate more than mindfulness meditation, and a 2023 meta-analysis of randomised trials found breathwork significantly reduced stress.
Heat and cold train the same system from the outside. Regular sauna use is associated in large Finnish population studies with lower rates of cardiovascular disease and better long-term health, and the heat drives circulation, muscle relaxation and deep sleep. Cold immersion triggers a sharp release of noradrenaline and dopamine, which is why people step out of the plunge alert, clear and lifted, and studies link regular cold exposure to improved mood and stress resilience. Alternating the two, contrast therapy, has been shown to reduce muscle soreness and speed recovery after hard effort.
The real skill is in the combination. Breath teaches you to stay calm when the cold hits and to settle deeply in the heat. Heat and cold give you a real, unfakeable place to practise. Each one makes the others work better, and together they recalibrate a nervous system that's been stuck on high.
Where it comes from
Sacha draws on functional nasal breathing, activating breath-and-hold practices, classical pranayama, freediving breath training and modern sports science, deliberately mixing the mechanisms to recalibrate old patterns and set up new ones. The tools the world's best athletes use, scaled to the person on the mat.
What you'll feel
Warmth, tingling, sometimes emotion, often a very quiet mind. Different practices bring different sensations. You're always in charge. Most people leave feeling clearer, calmer and switched on, with tools they can use at their desk, in the car or before bed.
Who leads it
Sacha Williamson has spent 28 years under the water and 16 teaching people to stay calm on a single breath. She is New Zealand's first Freediving Instructor Trainer and the first woman to hold the title, a Performance Breathing® certified coach in the system developed by Laird Hamilton, Gabby Reece, Patrick McKeown, Dr Andy Galpin, Dr Kelly Starrett and PJ Nestler, and a certified yoga instructor. She holds the Diploma in Wilderness Adventure Tourism and the Diploma in Outdoor Recreation (Leadership) (NZQA), and facilitates corporate wellbeing and nervous system resilience. Her clients have been surgeons, CEOs, athletes, teenagers and mums, and they all needed the same thing: a way to come back down.
Who it's for
Everybody. The person carrying a heavy workload. The one who doesn't sleep well. The athlete, the tradie, the shift worker, the parent. The one who's just curious and wants to explore. It doesn't matter who you are: your relationship with your breath can always be better. Recalibrate your breathing patterns, feel incredible, and empower yourself with a tool you carry everywhere. No experience needed, no fitness requirement, and you stay fully clothed on a mat.
What it costs
$20 for the class. Included if you hold a concession card. We highly recommend a sauna and cold plunge before or after; book the class and sauna together for the full midweek reset.
What to bring
Comfortable clothes, a water bottle, and a jumper for the end, because you cool down lying still. Togs and a towel if you're adding the sauna.
Before you come
If you are pregnant, or have a heart condition, epilepsy, high blood pressure or a serious respiratory condition, have a word with us and your GP first. The session can be adapted for you.
Booking
Small groups, bookings essential. Tell us the dates that suit and we'll confirm as soon as we can.
