Teach this yourself.
A professionally recognised SSI Instructor qualification, taught in the deep, clear water of the Bay of Islands. You'll come out able to run your own courses, in your own community.
Freedive Aotearoa is New Zealand's SSI freediving instructor training centre, founded by Sacha Williamson, the country's first female freedive instructor trainer.
Choose your pathway
Assistant Instructor — $1,800
Your first teaching qualification. Work alongside a full instructor, run skills sessions, and build your teaching hours.
Instructor, 80 hours — $3,800
The full qualification. Teaching methodology, in-water skill demonstration, rescue and safety management, and how to run a course from start to finish.
Instructor and Advanced Freediver, 150 hours — $3,600
Both together, and better value than taking them separately. Your own depth training alongside the teaching qualification.
What it covers
Depth, breathwork, rescue and emergency management, teaching methodology, and the leadership side — how to hold a group, read people, and keep everyone safe.
What you need
An existing freediving certification and solid in-water competence. Talk to us about where you're at and we'll tell you honestly whether you're ready or what to do first.
Sponsored places
A limited number of half-price places are funded through Water Safety New Zealand's Kia Maanu Kia Ora programme, for people who'll go back and teach in their own community. These are listed separately at freedive.co.nz — ask us if you think you qualify.
Two ways to book
1. Pay your $100 deposit at freedive.co.nz. It is non-refundable, and it is your SSI online learning — yours to keep for life, and you can start today. Pick your dates with us whenever you're ready. It counts toward your course price.
2. Request a date here. Tell us the dates that suit and we'll confirm as soon as we can.
