New Zealand's most complete SSI Mermaid pathway — internationally recognised training, taught calmly, in some of the country's most beautiful water. Small groups, and a focus on confidence and safety as much as on how it looks.

Freedive Aotearoa is New Zealand's SSI freediving instructor training centre, founded by Sacha Williamson, the country's first female freedive instructor trainer.

Choose your level

Discover Mermaid — $159
Your first time in a tail. A pool session to find out whether this is for you, with everything provided.

Mermaid Course — $350
Your first SSI certification. Monofin technique, breath-hold, safety and buddy skills, in confined water.

Ocean Mermaid Course — $450
Taking it into the open water. Entries, conditions, and performing in a real environment rather than a pool.

Mermaid + Ocean Mermaid — $700
Both certifications together, and the best value if you already know you want the ocean.

Mermaid Instructor — $2,500
Teach it yourself. The full instructor pathway, for people who want to run their own programmes.

Who it's for
You don't need any previous experience for Discover or the Mermaid Course. You need to be a comfortable swimmer and in good general health. If you're unsure about anything medical, talk to us before you book.

What's included
Tails, monofins and all specialist gear, SSI certification and digital materials, and your instructor in the water with you.

What to bring
Togs, a towel, water and something to eat. Tail hire is included — if you have your own, bring it.

1. Pay your $100 deposit at freedive.co.nz. It is non-refundable, and it is your SSI online learning — yours to keep for life, and you can start today. Pick your dates with us whenever you're ready. It counts toward your course price.
